Arctic National Wildlife Refuge 9.10
Live and work on the shores of the Arctic Ocean --- at the top of the world on Alaska's Arctic Coastal Plain!!!
The days are rapidly getting shorter on Alaska’s Arctic Coast --- signaling that a busy summer season is coming to a close ---
thus, we are NOW HIRING for all positions [guest service lead, kitchen lead, breakfast cook, lodging cleaner / dishwasher] for the
upcoming winter season. Ideally, a successful candidate will be available to begin work no later than
01 Oct 2009 and be available to work thru 15 Jan 2010. If 4+ months of work and adventure on Alaska’s Arctic Coast sounds
intriguing and exciting to you, please read on . . . . . . . .
THE REGION
Our longest summer day --- 63 days, 23 hours, 40 minutes --- official sunrise 12:09 am [20 May] --- official sunset 11:48 pm [22 July].
Our longest winter night --- 54 day, 22 hours, 51 minutes --- official sunset 12:27 pm [24 Nov] --- official sunrise 11:18 am [18 Jan].
Nowhere are the extreme conditions, brought about by intense sunlight and darkness, on such vivid and stark display as the high arctic
environment that is Alaska’s Arctic Coastal Plain.
Early-September --- extreme winter dark transforms the Arctic Coastal Plain into a vast white landscape that inspires awe and humility ---
the WHITE season is a time when, and a place where, only the most adaptable of humans, plants and animals are able to sustain life.
Late-May --- sunlight’s return is the catalyst for glimpses of brown that begin to punctuate the white and frozen landscape, and thus signaling
the beginning of spring --- the BROWN season is a very short but welcome reminder that summer quickly approaches.
Mid-June --- the sun once again reigns supreme as life flourishes in summer’s 24-hour arctic sunlight --- the GREEN season is a
time of hurried excitement as all arctic life participates in a race against time to harvest nature’s summer abundance as a foreboding
nine-month winter looms on time’s horizon.
Late-August --- an increasingly absent sun leads to a quick arrival of fall --- the YELLOW season sees a blanket of yellow,
orange, and red pulled over the tundra just weeks before the landscape will be dressed in winter white once again.
The amazingly intense seasonal transitions make Alaska's Arctic Coastal Plain an icon of America's wilderness ---
a place of simple splendor and passionate inspiration for those intrepid souls who choose to venture off-the-beaten-path to experience it.
THE CAMP
Deadhorse camp is located at mile 412.8 of the Dalton Highway, at the northern terminus of the only road in the western hemisphere to reach the
Arctic Ocean. Directly to the NORTH is the oil field services community of Deadhorse, the Prudhoe Bay oil fields, and the shores of the Arctic Ocean.
The Sagavanirktok River runs a few hundred yards to the EAST, backdropped by a magnificent tundra/mountain view of the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge. Far to the SOUTH are rolling foothills leading to the Brooks Mountain Range and the Gates of the Arctic National Park. A view to the
WEST towards Barrow delivers the vast tundrascape of the Arctic Coastal Plain for as far as the eye can see.
Deadhorse Camp offers camp-style accommodations in a cozy 17-room base camp with additional rooms available in adjacent seismic and drill
camps. Deadhorse Camp takes pride in providing crew workers and adventure-seeking travelers exactly that which they seek --- a clean,
comfortable room, and great food --- augmented by authentic and gracious hospitality.
Winter 2009-10 will find Deadhorse Camp providing overnight accommodations and serving
buffet meals to between 10 and 70 guests --- a number that can vary greatly week-to-week and month-to month --- during the winter season
the vast majority of Camp guests are those working on the Arctic Coast.
THE WORK
For work purposes, the winter is divided into two 4-month seasons. The first winter season formally begins 15 Sep 2009 and ends 15 Jan 2010.
Ideally, a successful candidate will be available to begin work no later than 01 Oct 2009.
ALL COWORKERS WHO SUCCESSFULLY WORKS THROUGH THE 15 JANUARY 2010 SEASON COMPLETION DATE WILL
QUALIFY FOR A SEASON COMPLETION TRANSPORTATION BONUS IN THE FORM OF A $1,000.00 REIMBURSEMENT
TOWARD THE COST OF THEIR ROUNDTRIP AIR TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM ALASKA.
ALL COWORKERS ARE PROVIDED A SHARED ROOM AND THREE MEALS PER DAY AT NO COST TO THE COWORKER.
A team consisting of just four coworkers will work together toward the goal of making the Deadhorse Camp’s 2009-10 winter season a
success. Our small coworker population means that most positions require a fair degree of flexibility in regards to the exact work being performed.
It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to be aware that [as indicated
previously] the guest numbers in Camp at any one time can fluctuate dramatically from week-to-week and month-to-month, therefore
the fluctuation in hours worked each week can be equally dramatic, ranging from 20 to 60
hours per week. Each of the Deadhorse Camp winter season positions are only a good fit for someone who has both economic
flexibility, and the desire to pursue other self-contained interests during the less-robust periods.
The details associated with each position for which we are NOW HIRING are as follows:
KITCHEN LEAD
Responsibilities: The kitchen lead has hands-on responsibility associated with executing all food production activity required to
create great dinner buffets for between 10 to 70 guests [and, play a leadership role in our very small kitchen team].
The Deadhorse Camp kitchen lead position is the perfect fit for a “foodie” --- a person with significant culinary knowledge and experience
who would look forward to spending the majority of their time “hands-on” with food creating great meals as opposed to “hands-off”
coordinating a large kitchen staff. Deadhorse Camp is the “small” camp on Alaska’s
Arctic Coast, and a critical ingredient to our success is our hard-earned reputation for great home-style meals [cooked primarily from
scratch] vs. the institutional, cafeteria-style meals [heat and serve] found at the “large” camps.
Dinner buffets are based on a three-week rotating menu.
Schedule: 12:00 Noon – 8:30 PM; 6 days per week
Compensation: $12.00/hour PLUS $1,000.00 transportation reimbursement season completion bonus PLUS room/meals
PLUS potential for $0.00 to $1.50/hour discretionary performance-based season completion bonus.
BREAKFAST COOK
Responsibilities: The breakfast cook has primary responsibility for all kitchen activities required to produce a
breakfast buffet or provide cook-to-order breakfast service for between 10 and 70 guests. Also has primary
responsibility for dessert/bread production and salad bar prep for the dinner buffet. One day per week the
breakfast cook relieves the kitchen lead on the dinner shift.
The breakfast cook position as a great fit for someone with a passion for baking.
Schedule: 2:00 AM – 10:30 AM; 5 days / week
12:00 Noon – 8:30 PM; 1 day / week
Compensation: $10.00/hour PLUS $1,000.00 transportation reimbursement season completion bonus PLUS
room/meals PLUS potential for $0.00 - $1.50/hour discretionary performance-based season completion bonus.
PLEASE REMEMBER
Deadhorse Camp is a drug-free workplace and all applicants should feel comfortable submitting to pre-employment,
random, and “for cause” drug testing. Deadhorse Camp is located within the North Slope Borough where it is illegal
to buy/sell alcohol, making the Camp a less than ideal fit for those living an alcohol-dependent lifestyle.
